Haven Update allows for Same-Gender Couples

One of the more standout indie games I’ve seen in a while is Haven from The Game Bakers. It’s a game that focuses on the moment-to-moment romantic lives of a couple fleeing their past lives on an epic space quest to find a place of belonging. While the game explores this relationship well, anyone outside of a heterosexual pairing might have liked an option to change that. Thanks to a free update that’s available now on all platforms, players can change Yu and Kay’s gender for three couple choices.

Players can now choose between the original pair, two men, or two women, complete with roughly 80,000 voice acting lines according to the game’s press release. Extensive game models and character assets were also added to make these versions of the characters feel right at home without a drop in quality that the core game already has. The story arc remains the same, this just gives more options for players as a delightful update.

Creative Director Emeric Thoa, who we’ve interviewed in the past, had this to say on the update via a press release, “Haven is about the freedom to love whomever you want. From the very early days of conception, we had created several couples for the game, with a diverse range of relationships. But the constraints of our indie team production made us focus on Yu and Kay only. After the game launch, we wanted to go back and work on this update. We hope that many players will feel better represented in the game.”

To celebrate the update, Haven is currently 40% off.
