Front Mission 2 Remake Release Date Announced
Tactical Mecha Drama Returns in Second Series Remake
While mecha gaming has always been around, there was something special about the tactical RPG series Front Mission, which really hit its stride with Front Mission 4 on PS2 but was unfortunately left behind in favor of other franchises. Following a remake of the first entry in the franchise –Front Mission 1st: Remake– Front Mission 2: Remake now has a summer release date, specifically on June 12th, 2023.
Releasing for the first time outside of Japan, Front Mission 2: Remake continues the dramatic political drama that made the first game so compelling for those into more serious military-grounded mecha games. Now featuring a graphical style closer to what was used in Front Mission 4, Front Mission 2: Remake will premiere on Nintendo Switch with improved loading speeds, a free camera option, new cosmetic options, enhanced sound effects, and a renewed soundtrack. The game will support several languages including EN, FR, ES, PT, IT, DE, PL, ZH, and JA which really opens up the game for far more players in an official capacity. Through the game’s campaign, players will switch between three perspectives to show the moral ambiguity of conflict and the fight for independence. Those unfamiliar with Front Mission can expect turn-based tactical combat and a ton of mecha customization.
This remake is being developed by Storm Trident S.A. and published by Forever Entertainment S.A. and judging by the reaction to the release from RPG fans and the number of features found in the publisher’s first foray into capturing the feeling of a unique series we could see another worthwhile tribute that brings a game from the past forward. For game history preservation's sake, it would be great if the original games were made available with very simple additions and a translated script but anytime we get a remake of a beloved title, especially one like this that makes the game more accessible to modern audiences, we take notice.
Personally, I’ve only played a few hours of Front Mission 4 but as a fan of big robots, it’s a series I’ve always kept in the back of my mind, particularly because most of the games were published by Square Enix and have a similar character design to some of my favorite experiences. It will be interesting to see how much cohesion there is for these two remakes as there’s a huge opportunity to sync the stories together to complement each other. Regardless, a niche game returning for a whole new generation of players is always a plus.
Front Mission 2: Remake is launching on Nintendo Switch on June 12th, 2023 at $34.99 USD.
Bringing a GameCube classic to the Switch, Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster was announced during the latest Nintendo Direct.
