Forspoken Launches Video Series on Mechanics and Magic

Square Enix Announces ThreePart Deep Dive

Fans looking to get new insight on Square Enix’s upcoming action-adventure RPG Forspoken were rewarded today. Square Enix published the first of three videos deep-diving into the various mechanics and abilities of protagonist Frey. Today’s video focuses on what the developers call “Magic Parkour”, showing off how Frey can use her abilities in a variety of ways to traverse up and around the landscape of Forspoken’s open world.

In this feature video, viewers get a glimpse of how Frey can move both in world traversal as well as in combat evasion. Also, it seems like each ability is tied to a different type of magic, based on the special effects and colors of the movements. Frey can speed-run with a yellow “Flow” run, glide across gaps and long jumps with a water-based “Float”, and traverse up cliffs acrobatically with “Soar.” These techniques deplete a stamina bar, though certain abilities will be able to restore this stamina quickly. Also, these mechanics can be upgraded later in the game to decrease their stamina use or increase their recovery. This “magic parkour” system seems poised to drive players’ exploration of the world, and if the variety of abilities is any indication, then this game is going to have a variety of locations to find.

Square Enix has also listed out the dates for its next two videos in this three-part series, released weekly. On November 3rd, the combat systems of Forspoken will be shown off, including various weapons and magic abilities the players will utilize in Frey’s adventure. November 10th’s post will round off the series by showing more of Athia, the setting of Forspoken; this video is to show off different quests and objectives the players will encounter during their playthrough.

Forspoken was first announced in June 2020 under the working title Project Athia. This game is the debut work from developer Luminous Productions under the umbrella of Square Enix. Later in March of 2021, the official title Forspoken was unveiled, featuring actress Ella Balinska as Frey with music from Bear McCreary and Garry Schyman and a script treatment from writers including Gary Whitta and Amy Hennig. Though the game has faced two separate delays due to developmental hurdles, Forspoken is on track to launch on January 24th, 2023 as a PS5 console exclusive as well as on PC platforms.
