Jupiter Hell looks like Turn-Based Roguelike DOOM and That's Awesome

PC

Rip and tear but take a minute maybe to think about your actions… Coming out of Early Access, Jupiter Hell has a slew of features being added to the game that up the replay value and finally brings the game into a full launch. A stylish and bloody animated trailer dropped the release date and a press release added further insight into this wild turn-based roguelike.

Jupiter Hell is an action sci-fi horror roguelike being developed by ChaosForge with publishing by Hyperstrange and apparently, the game’s development has been a 20-year process. According to a press release, the game went through a bit of a kerfuffle with Bethesda after a cease and desist was issued for a previous version of a similar idea. The game has been in Early Access on Steam for a while but in a few weeks, it will go into a full launch on August 5th on PC.

The game garnered notable industry attention during its successful Kickstarter in March 2019, leading the game to be backed by none other than John Carmack of DOOM and Oculus fame. Additionally, the 1.0 release will feature the voice talents of Mark Meer, the voice of Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect space epic. Aside from this, the new update will feature the fourth and final act of the story known as Dante Station as well as Trials Mode, Arena Mode, Endless Mode, Classic Mode, and more. Trials Mode allows players to tailor their run with various traits. Arena sees players defending against waves of enemies. Endless Mode creates randomized levels without episodes for continuous play. Lastly, Classic Mode strips away the story, branching areas, special levels, all for focused action.

What’s interesting is that while the game appears to be a top-down action title, it’s a turn-based roguelike under the hood similar to the Mystery Dungeon games but with a lot more guns than usual. These sort of games have never really been my strong suit but maybe the action elements carry more weight to the game than I expect. Regardless, kickass metal ringing out while slaying monsters is something that I don’t think will ever get old.

Jupiter Hell will be available on August 5th on Steam, GOG, Humble for $24.99 USD with a 20% discount for those that pick up the game at launch. More information is available on their website.

More roguelike dungeon-crawling can be found in our review of Void Terrarium and there’s more demon ripping to enjoy in our review of DOOM Eternal.
