NieR Replicant Sells Over One Million Copies, Automata Sells Over Six Million

What started as a spin-off to a fairly niche series of hack-and-slash games has become a successful franchise for Square Enix. NieR really took the world by storm with NieR Automata, which arguably made a remake for the original game possible. Flashforward to 2021, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… has officially sold over one million units. In that same press release, Square Enix revealed that NieR Automata has sold over six million copies. That’s a lot of sales that will hopefully lead to more entries in this wildly weird series from Yoko Taro and their incredibly talented team.

Judging by the other piece of news attached to the announcement, the Steam version of NieR Replicant had some issues because a performance patch was noted. This is interesting because NieR Automata has famously been a less-than-ideal experience on Steam and an update patch was reportedly in the works as of April of this year. Meanwhile, lore-chasing fans of the series have been pouring over translations of collaboration events in the mobile game NieR Re[in]carnation which is slated for a NA/EU release in late July. The mobile platform is getting more and more meaningful attention from Square Enix with titles like Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis and Just Cause Mobile, so it makes sense that NieR would get a similar release.

For fans, especially English-speaking ones, now is a great time to be into NieR. I recently finished Replicant (review soon) and I picked up two NieR novels to read eventually. It’s a series of games that I love hearing lore information about and I find the music to be absolutely breathtaking. I’ve got criticisms, sure, but overall it’s a series full of a particular strangeness that I haven’t found anywhere else.

More information about NieR can be found on the official website. Those looking for NieR Re[in]carnation news should follow either their Facebook page or Twitter account

Update 6/29/2021 - Article has been updated to account for the NieR Re[in]carnation release date. The game will be available on July 28th on both Android and iOS.
