8-Bit Legit to Publish Point-and-Click Dead Tomb on Switch, Xbox, and NES
Retro Sensibilities for Modern Players or Those with an NES / Equivalent
Time travel goes awry for the plucky hero of Dead Tomb, a new 8-bit point-and-click adventure game from CollectorVision and Acclaim published by 8-Bit Legit, that results in the traveler emergency landing a malfunctioning ship in 1300 BC, that leads to getting abducted by Egyptian soldiers that subsequently toss him into the depths of a pyramid. To escape the pyramid and get back on course, players will have to meticulously explore the tombs, solve puzzles, avoid danger, and find a diamond that will restore the ship’s power all through authentic retro gameplay mechanics with a presentation that hearkens back to iconic games of the past.
While the visuals, sounds, and mechanics will draw in any retro-gaming fan with a love for this style of selecting action words and clicking on areas of interest what boggles the mind is that this Dead Tomb is a game that natively runs on the NES and is also releasing on modern consoles. Yes, the iconic 8-bit console is still getting games and we’ve seen several over the years. The game is even being brought to the Phoenix, the open-source FPGA, ColecoVision-compatible console from CollectorVision. However, what stands out the most is that Dead Tomb is the first physical NES release from 8-Bit Legit through their “Final Edition” line, marking an important moment for the team. Although, according to a press release, Dead Tomb “Final Edition” is limited to just 300 copies.
8-Bit Legit is described as a retro-driven partnership between Mega Cat Studios and Retrotainment Games that provides both physical releases and modern digital publishing of retro-style games. Games they’ve touched so far include Dead Tomb, Project Blue, Full Quiet, Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril, NEScape!, Ronin’s Tale, and Trophy.
Tim Hartman (whom we have spoken to many times at various events over the years, most notably about Full Quiet which is now on NES, Steam, Switch, and Xbox) is a Producer and Partner at 8-Bit Legit, sharing this quote via that press release, “Having Dead Tomb as our first release is an honor, as the team at CollectorVision/Acclaim are such a vital part to not only the indie NES but retro community as well."
While Acclaim is fairly well known for several retro staples, CollectorVision might also ring a bell for fans of this type of game development. CollectorVision is known for Sydney Hunter and we even covered Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan when it was released on Switch and we’ve interviewed John Lester (P.R, Marketing & Community Manager for CollectorVision, as well as beloved YouTuber Gamester81) in the past. Dead Tomb as a project feels like a Super Friends-style team-up for retro gaming and hopefully, we’ll continue to see more releases like this in the future.
Dead Tomb will be available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, NES, and Phoenix. Pre-orders are open now. The digital release on Switch and Xbox will be available on January 26th, 2024. Physical NES “Final Edition” copies are expected to ship in Q3 2024.
