DualSense Edge PS5 Controller Announced at Gamescom

Further Details via PlayStation Blog

In an extremely dark video, the DualSense Edge PS5 controller was revealed during the Opening Night Live event during Gamescom, an event held in Cologne, Germany from August 24th - 28th and featuring games throughout the medium. While the controller announcement from PlayStation was hard to see exactly what was being shown, details about the controller were highlighted in an official update from PlayStation Blog. The point of comparison to consider is of course the Xbox Elite Controller but there has been a lot of competition for premium gameplay input devices with the rise of multiple levels of esports events globally.

As shared on the PlayStation Blog, the DualSense Edge seeks to serve players wanting more customization and precision in their gaming. Featuring back buttons, trigger stops, software to tweak settings and save profiles, and higher-quality sticks with removable caps. There’s no word if the buttons are using micro switches or that of a standard DualSense, which would fix my only complaint with the core PS5 controller aside from the fear of stick drift.

Analog stick quality has been awful in recent years, so having the controller feature replaceable stick modules is a step in the right direction for players. These replacement modules will be sold separately.

Details are subject to change but here’s what one can expect in the box:

  • DualSense Edge Controller

  • Stick Caps, three pairs (standard, high dome, low dome)

  • Back Button Sets, two sets (half dome and lever)

  • USB Type-C Braided cable with a connector housing

  • Carrying Case, charge controller while in the case

Unfortunately, a release date or price was not given for the DualSense Edge. A standard DualSense retails at $69.99 USD with a special edition or colorful version retails slightly higher at $74.99 USD. For comparison, an Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller retails for $179.99 USD. Meanwhile, other premium controller providers have similar offerings such as the Scuf Reflex for PS5, starting at $199.99 USD with the option for custom options. Battle Beaver Customs start their custom PS5 controllers at $82.00 USD. We will likely see the DualSense Edge for around $150 - $200, however, I think that getting closer to the $100 range would be most appealing.

Unless, of course, the DualSense Edge stands above the competition with sheer quality but that is a hard thing to accomplish for any gaming hardware product.

Update 10/18/2022 - The DualSense Edge controller will be launching globally on January 26th, 2023, and will retail at $199.99 USD. Pre-orders are scheduled to start on October 25th through PlayStation directly.
