Super Mario Bros Movie Trailer Shows a Terrifying Bowser and Colorful World

Nintendo and Illumination Reveals the Film’s First Trailer

Revealed through a Nintendo Direct as well as a showing at New York City ComicCon, the much-anticipated trailer for the Super Mario Bros movie has been revealed. This animated film is helmed by Illumination, the studio behind the popular Despicable Me movies. Since video game franchises are just now getting truly good movies (see Sonic 2, it’s great) there was a lot of trepidation about the film, especially since the production has been so secretive. However, this latest trailer shows that the Mushroom Kingdom looks incredibly true to the source material and Bowser is more powerful than most iterations.

According to Miyamoto’s part of the presentation, the film has been in careful production for a while with a lot of Nintendo involvement. The film’s voice team is full of Hollywood stars including Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), and many more. Chris Meledandri of Illumination shared just where they were with the project and also revealed that the score is being worked on by composer Brian Tyler in collaboration with Koji Kondo. Apparently, Illumination has been in talks with Nintendo about a movie for about seven years, showing just how much effort is going into representing one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. Actors Chris Pratt and Jack Black also shared their love of gaming during the direct.

Should the Super Mario Bros movie succeed, we could see several films with Nintendo properties. Considering the success of franchising the movie industry, this could even lead to a Super Smash Bros team-up film, similar to what The Avengers achieved for Marvel. With the inclusion of Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong on the cast, there’s evidence already that Nintendo wants to bring their games into a shared film universe.

We will excitedly see the film when it hits theaters on April 7th, 2023.
